Institutional OTC Crypto Trading Platform – Use Case
Challenge
Institutional crypto OTC desks were operating on manual WhatsApp and phone-based deal flows with no atomic settlement, no compliance audit trail, no real-time price aggregation, and unacceptable counterparty risk on large block trades
Solution
Fully automated, blockchain-settled OTC crypto trading platform with RFQ engine, atomic swap settlement via smart contracts, multi-custodian integration, real-time price aggregation across 12 liquidity sources, and a built-in KYC/AML and Vara compliance layer for institutional onboarding
Results
$10M+ in OTC block trades settled in first 6 months, average settlement time reduced from 4 hours to under 90 seconds, zero counterparty default events, and full regulatory audit trail across every transaction
The Problem

Over-the-counter (OTC) crypto trading — the direct exchange of large digital assets — is a high-value segment, with daily volumes exceeding those on exchanges. However, the infrastructure was outdated, with deals negotiated over WhatsApp and price quotes from spreadsheets. Settlement was slow, and counterparty risk was managed by trust.

Our client, a global OTC desk, partnered with Blocsys Technologies to build the institutional-grade OTC infrastructure the market needed.

Key Issues:
Manual RFQ process over messaging apps created no audit trail, no timestamp integrity, and no enforceable deal record — exposing both counterparties to dispute risk on every trade
Settlement of large block trades required 2 to 6 hours of manual coordination between internal ops teams, external custodians, and counterparty compliance departments
No atomic settlement mechanism — one party routinely sent assets before the counterparty had confirmed receipt, creating a window of unhedged counterparty default exposure on every trade
Price aggregation was entirely manual — traders refreshed multiple exchange dashboards and maintained spreadsheet models to derive a fair mid-market price, introducing human error and latency into every quote
Compliance and KYC onboarding was managed through email chains with no structured workflow, no verification status tracking, and no on-chain attestation — making regulatory audits labour-intensive
No institutional-grade reporting — fund managers and compliance officers had no automated trade confirmation, settlement receipt, or daily position report exportable for internal risk systems
Multi-asset trading across BTC, ETH, SOL, stablecoins (USDT, USDC, USDE), and tokenized assets required separate manual processes per asset class with no unified workflow
Existing OTC software vendors offered CRM-style tools with no blockchain settlement — leaving counterparty risk entirely unaddressed at the infrastructure level
Our Solution

Blocsys Technologies designed and delivered a production-grade institutional OTC trading platform that automates the full deal lifecycle — from RFQ and price discovery through compliance verification, deal matching, atomic on-chain settlement, and post-trade reporting. The platform eliminates every manual touchpoint in the traditional OTC workflow while introducing blockchain-level settlement finality and a complete regulatory audit trail.

What It Does:
Enables institutional counterparties to submit, receive, and negotiate RFQs for large block trades across 30+ digital assets via a secure web interface with full timestamp integrity and deal record immutability
Aggregates real-time mid-market prices across 12 liquidity sources including Binance, Coinbase Advanced, Kraken, OKX, Bybit, and multiple OTC liquidity providers via unified WebSocket and REST API feeds
Executes atomic swap settlement on Ethereum and EVM-compatible chains — both legs of a trade settle simultaneously in a single on-chain transaction, eliminating counterparty default risk at the infrastructure level
Onboards institutional counterparties through a structured KYC/AML workflow with automated entity verification, beneficial ownership checks, Chainalysis wallet screening, and on-chain compliance attestation
Generates automated post-trade confirmations, settlement receipts, daily position summaries, and regulatory-format trade reports exportable directly from the platform
Supports multi-custodian settlement via integrations with Fireblocks MPC custody, BitGo institutional custody, and Copper ClearLoop — enabling counterparties to settle without moving assets off their existing custody infrastructure
Provides a live OTC desk dashboard with open RFQ tracking, deal pipeline management, counterparty credit limit monitoring, and real-time P&L and exposure reporting
Key Features & Technical Specifications:
RFQ engine — built on WebSocket persistent connections delivering sub-50ms quote delivery latency; RFQ state managed via Redis pub/sub with PostgreSQL persistence for full deal audit log
Price aggregation layer — normalised order book data aggregated from 12 exchanges via CCXT library and proprietary WebSocket adapters; VWAP and mid-market price calculated in real time with configurable spread markup engine
Atomic swap smart contracts — Solidity-based Hash Time-Locked Contract (HTLC) implementation on Ethereum and Arbitrum; both asset legs locked in escrow and released atomically upon SHA-256 preimage revelation, with automatic refund after configurable timeout
EVM multi-chain settlement — primary settlement on Ethereum mainnet for large-value trades; Arbitrum One and Polygon PoS for gas-optimised mid-tier settlement; chain selection automated based on trade size and asset type
Smart Wallet (Non-Custodial Wallet) API integration — institutional counterparties authorise settlement transactions via Fireblocks MPC signing without exposing private keys; transaction policies enforced at the Fireblocks workspace level
Chainalysis KYT (Know Your Transaction) API — every wallet address involved in a trade screened in real time against Chainalysis sanctions lists, exposure categories, and risk scores before settlement authorisation
Results
$780M+Institutional OTC block trades settled on-chain within the first 6 months of live operations across BTC, ETH, SOL, USDT, and USDC
Under 90 SecondsAverage trade settlement time reduced from 2 to 6 hours of manual coordination
ZeroCounterparty default events recorded
<50msPrice aggregation latency via real-time WebSocket feeds
<48 HoursCompliance onboarding reduced from 5–10 business days
100%Trades produced immutable on-chain settlement receipt
14Institutional counterparties enabled via Fireblocks and BitGo integrations
70%Ops team headcount requirement reduced
Long-Term Benefits:
Atomic swap settlement permanently eliminates the counterparty default risk category from the client's operational risk register — a structural risk reduction no insurance product or legal agreement can replicate
Real-time price aggregation across 12 liquidity sources creates a sustainable best-execution pricing advantage — tighter spreads attract higher trade volumes which generate deeper liquidity relationships in a compounding cycle
On-chain audit trail and automated regulatory reporting positions the platform ahead of Vara, MiCA (EU), FCA digital asset regulations, and MAS PSA reporting requirements — compliance infrastructure is already built, not retrofitted.
